You're getting ready to make an investment that will require both your time and capital. We recommend you ask these questions (and get the right answers) when you're evaluating your next marketing agency.
QUESTION 1: DO THEY SPECIALIZE IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Why that's important: You want an agency that focuses exclusively on your vertical. If any agency says they can work with your niche products/services and they are also managing social media for a mom & pop flower shop, that's a red flag!
QUESTION 2: DO THEY WORK WITH YOUR COMPETITORS?
Why that's important: What's stopping the agency from learning your trade secrets, tactics, etc., and then going and managing marketing for your competition with some of the same tactics? Make sure they agree to and sign a non-compete. It's a red flag is they will not.
QUESTION 3: CAN THEY SHOW A ROI IN THE FORM OF REVENUE?
Why that's important: You're about to make a large investment. You should expect a return on it. In today's world, marketing can absolutely prove an ROI. If they can't show examples, that's a red flag.
QUESTION 4: CAN YOU TALK TO A FEW OF THEIR CURRENT CLIENTS?
Why that's important: You should hear what it's like to work and interact with your potential marketing partner. Ask to talk to clients. It's a red flag if they can't share any.
QUESTION 5: DO THEY HAVE A FRAMEWORK OR METHODOLOGY?
Why that's important: You want to work with industry leaders, not followers. Do they have a proprietary approach to growth? It's a red flag if they don't.
If you ask good questions like these when looking for your next marketing agency, you will be able to find one that specializes in your business type.
